Brief description of the programme/project/Initiative  :

Day to day thousands of people are reported missing in our country and many of them are never found. The NHRC Action Research on Trafficking, published by Orient Longman in 2005, has revealed that in any given year, an average of 44000 children are reported missing; of them, as many as 11000 remain untraced. The cases of \”Missing Persons\” can be broadly categorized into people who are missing, runaway, abducted/kidnapped, deserted, untraced, escaped, unidentified dead body or an unidentified person etc… Despite the efforts of the police and other agencies countless children, women and men are missing and many of them land in the hands of exploiters and evil /hostile environments. \”Despite being the national repository of \’crime data\’, the NCRB is unaware both of children who are traced or of those who remain untraced\” (report of the NHRC committee on missing children-2007). With its multiple complexities the issue of \”missing persons\’ it is impossible for one person/s, agency or government department to address the issue of missing persons. Adding to this complexity is the lack of proper data and monitoring/tracking of \”missing persons\”. It is time the civil society comes together to address this issue. This website of \”missing persons\” seeks to address these gaps so as to ensure that all the missing women, children and men are recorded & restored and also ensure that perpetrators who exploited them are exposed and punished. Department of Women Development &Child Welfare and the Police seek the involvement of NGOs/CSOs, parents/guardians, allied agencies all the right thinking citizens come together in this initiative to address the issue of missing persons. This service is put-in-place to locate a missing women/ child/ man who is lost, missing or is suspected of having been kidnapped or has runaway or has been untraced as result of major disaster etc… and to bring a new hope to the parents/ families who are unable search and trace their loved ones.

Why was the project started  :

Despite sixty plus years of independence , the benefits of economic development have not trickled down to the marginalized sections of the society and millions of people still live below the poverty line. The poverty and hunger makes children and women belonging to the poor sections of the society highly vulnerable to human trafficking. Social and religious practices too have been a big cause.. Purposes include forced prostitution, marriage, domestic labour, bonded labour, agricultural labour, industrial labour, entertainment, begging, adoption, drug smuggling and peddling and organ transplants .As India sees towards the world, it leaves behind the scars on its ground –the poor who are exploited. The law enforcement agencies need to be supported enormously in dealing with human trafficking. So with that motive this portal has been started.

Objective : To ensure that all the missing women, children and men are recorded & restored and also ensure that perpetrators who exploited them are exposed and punished.
